Apple announced historic iPhone revenue for its first fiscal quarter, but the celebration in Cupertino is tempered by a stark warning. On January 29, 2026, CEO Tim Cook confirmed that production of new iPhones is being constrained by a shortage of the most advanced chips from its primary supplier, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). This bottleneck comes despite surging demand, particularly from China.
Finance chief Kevan Parekh projected revenue growth between 13% and 16% for the current quarter, a forecast already adjusted for these supply limitations. The core issue is a fundamental shift in the semiconductor industry. Nvidia has reportedly overtaken Apple as TSMC's most important customer, with its artificial intelligence processors consuming enormous factory capacity and commanding priority. This has left Apple, once the undisputed top client, negotiating for its share.
Reports indicate Apple faces price increases of 8% to 10% for its next-generation chips. The problem extends beyond processors. Memory chip producers like Samsung and SK Hynix are prioritizing high-bandwidth memory for AI data centers, driving up costs for the DRAM and NAND flash used in smartphones. Samsung reported DRAM prices rose more than 30% last quarter.
Analysts describe this as a strategic, long-term reallocation of global chipmaking resources toward AI, not a temporary shortage. In response, Apple is reportedly exploring manufacturing some chips with Intel in U.S. facilities, leveraging federal CHIPS Act funding. However, TSMC remains essential for Apple's highest-performance silicon.
While Apple's massive scale and long-term contracts provide some insulation, the company acknowledges sharper impacts later this year. The situation tests Apple's legendary supply chain management, with the cost and availability of components for future iPhones hanging in the balance.
