Apple is preparing to introduce a new kind of smart home device this spring, one that can physically turn to face you. According to reports from The Information and Bloomberg, the company is developing a tabletop hub with a robotic, swiveling base, a built-in screen, and speakers, expected to cost around $350.
The device represents a distinct shift for Apple in the home automation space, where it has traditionally trailed Amazon and Google. While past products like the HomePod focused on sound, this hub integrates movement with Apple's AI software, known as Apple Intelligence. The idea is for the device to act as a central command post, responding to voice commands by rotating its display to follow a user or optimize the angle for a video call, recipe, or security check.
Analysts see the moving mechanism as Apple's attempt to differentiate its offering in a crowded market. Instead of a static screen, the hub could create a more responsive and interactive experience. It is designed to work tightly with Apple's existing HomeKit platform to control lights, locks, and other connected devices.
The project signals a serious investment. Hundreds of engineers have reportedly worked on it, with manufacturing partnerships established in Vietnam. This launch is seen as a first step; Bloomberg has reported that Apple is also developing a more advanced tabletop robot for a potential 2027 release. For now, the company is betting that a simple swivel could make home AI feel more present and useful when it arrives in the coming months.
