Starting tomorrow, a significant portion of Apple's smart home ecosystem will go dark. The company is ending support for its original HomeKit Accessory Protocol (HAP), a move that will disconnect an untold number of older devices from Apple's Home app, Siri, and automated routines. This isn't a gradual phase-out; for products without a specific firmware update, the cutoff on June 25 is absolute.

The shift is the final step in Apple's full adoption of Matter, an industry-wide connectivity standard it helped develop. While Matter promises better compatibility across different brands, it leaves behind devices built on Apple's older, proprietary system. This includes smart lights, plugs, locks, and sensors from the past decade, particularly from manufacturers that have since left the market or moved on from older product lines.

For users, the burden is to check each device's manufacturer for a Matter-compatible update. Companies like Eve and Nanoleaf have issued updates for many products, but devices from defunct brands or those with limited hardware will simply stop working within the Apple ecosystem. The change has sparked considerable frustration among early adopters who invested in what was marketed as a stable, integrated platform.

Apple's decision underscores a broader industry pivot. Google and Amazon are also steering their devices toward Matter, aiming to reduce fragmented standards. Apple, however, is executing this transition with characteristic decisiveness, prioritizing a unified future over backward compatibility. As new home-focused hardware is anticipated from Apple, this clean break aims to set a new foundation, even as it renders a chapter of smart home history obsolete.
