The smartphone industry is bracing for a major new competitor. According to multiple reports, Apple is preparing to launch its first foldable iPhone in 2026, a move analysts predict will immediately capture over one-fifth of the global market for folding phones.

Research cited by Tom’s Guide indicates the device, often called the iPhone Fold, could secure 22% of the foldable segment in its first year. More strikingly, it is projected to take more than a third of the category's total revenue, thanks to Apple's premium pricing power. Rumors suggest a price tag exceeding $2,000.

The anticipated design, based on renders from leakers like Jon Prosser, points to a book-style phone with a 7.8-inch inner screen and a 5-inch outer display. A key focus for Apple has reportedly been perfecting a hinge and display that minimize the visible crease, a common complaint with current foldables, as noted by MacRumors.

Apple's entry presents a direct challenge to Samsung, which has led the foldable market since 2019. Industry observers note Samsung is already developing new wide-fold models specifically to counter Apple's launch. The pressure is acute; Samsung's foldable market share in critical regions like China has dwindled to single digits amid fierce local competition.

Google's Pixel Fold also stands in the path of Apple's rollout. While Google has emphasized software refinement for foldable Android devices, Apple's tight integration of its iOS operating system with custom hardware could set a new standard for user experience.

The arrival of a foldable iPhone is expected to accelerate the entire market, pushing developers to create more apps for the form factor and forcing rivals to innovate more rapidly on price and durability. For consumers, 2026 may mark the year the folding phone moves from a niche novelty toward the mainstream, led by the industry's most influential player.
