In a landmark decision for consumer technology, Apple's iPhone and iPad have become the first commercially available mobile devices authorized to process classified NATO information. The approval, confirmed on February 26, 2026, means these devices can now be used for data up to the NATO RESTRICTED level without any specialized modifications.

The certification follows a rigorous, multi-year evaluation led by Germany's Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). The agency had previously cleared the devices for handling classified German government data. Its exhaustive technical assessment formed the basis for the broader NATO endorsement, which applies to all member nations for devices running iOS 26 and iPadOS 26.

This move formally recognizes the built-in security architecture of Apple's products—including hardware encryption, Face ID, and memory integrity protections—as meeting the alliance's strict operational standards. Claudia Plattner, President of the BSI, noted that the approval underscores the success of integrating security from the initial design phase, a principle her agency rigorously audited.

For Apple, the certification validates a long-standing company philosophy. "We designed the most secure devices for everyone, not just specialized clients," said Ivan Krstić, Apple's vice president of Security Engineering and Architecture. He emphasized that this level of government certification remains unique in the industry, setting Apple's platforms apart.

The devices are now listed in the NATO Information Assurance Product Catalogue, a pivotal step that could reshape how government and defense personnel use mobile technology in sensitive environments.
