CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple is preparing to rewrite its own playbook next year. According to multiple industry reports, the company plans an unusually rapid, two-phase update for its MacBook Pro line in 2026, a sharp break from its traditional annual update cycle.

The strategy, detailed by analysts including Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities, calls for two distinct releases. The first, expected in the first half of the year, will bring a processor upgrade to new M5 Pro and M5 Max chips within the current laptop design. The second, slated for later in 2026, will be a comprehensive redesign featuring a thinner, lighter chassis and a long-anticipated shift to OLED display technology.

This split approach suggests Apple is navigating a complex transition. The early release gets its next-generation silicon to performance-focused users quickly. The later model combines that chip’s efficiency with new hardware, where an OLED screen is key to achieving a slimmer profile without sacrificing battery life. Display analysts, including Ross Young, confirm supply chains are aligning for laptop-sized OLED panels by 2026.

The move comes as the computer industry pivots sharply toward on-device artificial intelligence. Apple’s recent M4 chip, launched in the iPad Pro, was marketed heavily for its AI capabilities. The M5 family is expected to push that further. Simultaneously, a reported company-wide push for thinner devices, seen in upcoming iPhones and Watches, will reach the MacBook Pro with the late-year redesign.

This accelerated cadence is also a clear competitive response. With Microsoft and partners promoting new ARM-based "Copilot+ PCs" and making direct performance claims against Apple’s hardware, the tech giant appears unwilling to cede momentum. By updating both its internal silicon and external design in one year, Apple aims to solidify its lead in the high-end notebook market during a period of renewed industry rivalry.
