While the nation celebrated a historic World Cup win and a Knicks championship, Anthropic found itself in a very different kind of contest. On Friday afternoon, the U.S. government issued an export control directive demanding the company suspend access to its latest models - Mythos 5 and Fable 5 - by any foreign national, including its own employees. The order, which arrived with a 90-minute ultimatum, forced Anthropic to effectively disable the products it had been hyping for weeks and send executives scrambling to Washington, D.C., to negotiate with the Trump administration.

The root of the conflict? A reported jailbreak of Fable 5's guardrails. Anthropic maintains the vulnerability was narrow and non-universal, and that similar capabilities are widely available from competitors like OpenAI's GPT-5.5. But the administration's concerns, fueled by a report from an unnamed "highly credible trusted partner," escalated quickly. Some sources point to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy flagging internal red-teaming results, though independent testers say they were impressed with Fable 5's protections.

The stakes are enormous. If the administration follows through, it could set a precedent for restricting advanced AI models across the industry, potentially hobbling U.S. companies in the global race. Alex Stamos, who organized a public letter urging the repeal of restrictions, warned that Chinese labs are only months behind. "They are laughing at us in Beijing right now," he said. "One of America's champions is being kneecapped by the US government."

As negotiations continue, the industry watches closely. The directive has already spurred backup contracts with non-U.S. providers and deployment of open-weight models on alternative hardware. For Anthropic, the timing couldn't be worse - the company had banked on Mythos to recover from previous clashes with the Pentagon. Now, the U.S. government may have inadvertently accelerated the very outcome it sought to prevent.
