While protests over data centers and growing skepticism about AI dominate the news cycle, Anthropic has quietly launched a feature designed to make you think twice before walking away from its chatbot. The company unveiled "Reflect" on Thursday, a built-in dashboard that tracks and visualizes your usage of Claude. On its face, it's a straightforward analytics tool: It shows which topics you've discussed, how often you check in, and what kinds of tasks you hand off to the AI.

But Reflect is doing more than crunching numbers. It's subtly reshaping how users perceive AI by positioning Claude as both a go-to productivity booster and a regular part of your daily routine. The dashboard lays out all the work Claude has helped with, and seeing that list can make you realize just how much you've come to rely on it. Anthropic also prompts you to reflect on your habits, with occasional pop-up questions like, "What's one thing you want to keep doing yourself, even if Claude could do it faster?" The feature even includes quiet hours and break reminders, acknowledging that chatbots - always ready with an answer - can be hard to step away from.

This isn't a new trick. Back in 2012, Google introduced Gmail Meter, which showed users charts of their email traffic and storage, subtly reinforcing how central Gmail had become to their digital lives. Claude's Reflect goes a step further by actively coaching users on better AI habits. For example, it might suggest using Claude's Projects feature to avoid re-explaining work context - a move that also locks users deeper into the ecosystem. Anthropic says sensitive conversations appear only at a high level, and health-related chats are excluded entirely. The data isn't used for other purposes. Reflect is now in beta for Free, Pro, and Max users with memory enabled, with a time-tracking view coming later.
