Anthropic's abrupt suspension of access to its latest AI models, triggered by a U.S. government directive, has sent ripples through India's tech sector. The move, which blocks foreign nationals - including Anthropic's own employees abroad - from using the Fable 5 and Mythos 5 systems, has reignited a familiar question: can the world's second-largest AI market keep betting on American-made models?
The timing stung. Just days earlier, Anthropic had announced a partnership with Tata Consultancy Services to push enterprise AI across India. Now, founders and investors are rethinking what sovereignty means when critical tools can be cut off by geopolitical fiat.
"This materially changes how we should think about sovereign AI in India," said Aakrit Vaish, founder of AI venture platform Activate. He expects startups to pivot toward open-source alternatives and is urging his portfolio companies to diversify away from frontier providers. Vijay Rayapati, CEO of Atomicwork, warned that companies with multinational teams now face a competitive disadvantage if their AI staff isn't entirely U.S.-based.
The debate isn't just about startups. Zoho's Sridhar Vembu called technology "the ultimate weapon," urging Indian organizations to adopt smaller, open-source models. Former Infosys executive Mohandas Pai proposed a massive national push - a ₹500 billion annual fund for AI and deep tech, plus a ₹2 trillion credit guarantee for cloud and semiconductor infrastructure. That would far exceed the current IndiaAI Mission's ₹103.72 billion budget.
Policy expert Prasanto Roy sees a broader lesson: "There's no such thing as a geopolitically neutral foreign LLM. American AI models are bound to American geopolitics." For India, the path forward may require building its own.
