A new front has opened in the AI industry's commercial wars. This week, Anthropic launched a pointed advertising campaign criticizing its rival OpenAI's plan to introduce ads into ChatGPT. The series of short videos, released ahead of the Super Bowl, depicts awkward scenarios where an AI assistant suggests intrusive products—like insoles for a "short king" or a dating site for someone struggling with family communication. Each clip ends with the tagline: "Ads are coming to AI. But not to Claude."

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded on social media, calling the ads "so clearly dishonest." He defended OpenAI's approach, announced last month, stating that ads will help fund free access to AI tools. "We believe everyone deserves to use AI," Altman wrote, contrasting his company's mission with what he characterized as Anthropic serving "an expensive product to rich people." Anthropic offers a free tier of Claude.

OpenAI's policy states that future ads in ChatGPT will be "separate and clearly labeled," will not influence answers, and will not share user conversations with advertisers. The company says it will provide controls to disable personalization or choose a paid, ad-free plan.

The public spat underscores a fundamental philosophical divide. Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI researchers, argued in a recent blog post that ads would compromise an AI assistant's role as a trusted adviser for personal or complex tasks. OpenAI, facing slowing subscription growth amid massive infrastructure costs, now views ads as a necessary step for sustainability.

Whether users will accept sponsored messages at the bottom of a ChatGPT conversation, or seek alternatives, remains an open question. For now, the debate over the soul—and business model—of mainstream AI is playing out in real time.
