In a significant legal challenge, the artificial intelligence firm Anthropic has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Defense and other federal agencies. The case, reported by The Wall Street Journal, stems from the Pentagon's move to designate the company a threat to its supply chain and to terminate federal contracts.

The lawsuit names Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and several government departments as defendants. Anthropic alleges the Pentagon's actions exceeded its legal authority and were retaliatory, following disagreements over the company's technology. The central dispute involves the military's demand for unrestricted access to Anthropic's Claude AI for use in combat operations. The Pentagon reportedly threatened to cancel contracts and disrupt supply chains if the company refused.

Anthropic's leadership has consistently declined to grant the military full access to its systems. Company officials argue it is too early to rely on such technology for developing autonomous weapons. They also maintain that using their AI for domestic surveillance lacks a proper legal foundation. This lawsuit sets the stage for a high-stakes legal test of corporate autonomy, military procurement, and the ethical boundaries of emerging technology.
