Anthropic is making a significant change to how its Claude AI can be accessed, directly impacting users of third-party applications like OpenClaw. Starting April 4th, a standard Claude subscription will no longer cover usage through these external platforms. Instead, customers must adopt a separate, pay-as-you-go billing model for such access.

The move, communicated to users late Friday, effectively raises the cost of using Claude via tools like OpenClaw. The company stated its subscription plans "weren't built for the usage patterns of these third-party tools," citing capacity management and a focus on direct customers. Subscribers will receive a one-time credit equal to their monthly fee and can purchase discounted usage bundles for continued access.

Industry observers note the policy shift arrives as OpenClaw's creator, Peter Steinberger, now works for rival OpenAI. Steinberger indicated he and OpenClaw board member Dave Morin attempted to negotiate, securing only a one-week delay. The change may encourage users toward Anthropic's own integrated offerings, such as Claude Cowork.

OpenClaw gained attention for automating complex tasks like email and calendar management, but its success appears to have strained Anthropic's infrastructure. This decision reflects the growing pains in the AI platform business, where providers are balancing open access with sustainable resource allocation and commercial priorities.
