The race for AI dominance is being funded at staggering new levels. On Thursday, Anthropic announced it has closed a $30 billion funding round, valuing the company at $380 billion. This colossal sum, led by Coatue and Singapore's GIC, solidifies Anthropic's position as a primary rival to OpenAI, which set the current record last year with a $40 billion raise.

The capital is a necessity, not just a trophy. Developing frontier AI models demands immense investment in computing power, primarily from Nvidia's chips. Both companies are competing not only with each other but with tech giants like Google, which plans to spend up to $185 billion this year on capital expenditures.

Anthropic, founded by ex-OpenAI personnel, has carved a distinct path by focusing on business clients. While OpenAI captured the public's imagination with ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude platform has become embedded in corporate workflows. The company reports annualized revenue has jumped to $14 billion, with 80% coming from enterprises.

A key driver is Claude Code, an AI tool that automates software development. Its annualized revenue has hit $2.5 billion, and business subscriptions have quadrupled since January. This surge has contributed to investor anxiety and a significant selloff in traditional software stocks.

The new funds will expand infrastructure and research. The round includes portions of previously pledged investments from Microsoft and Nvidia. Meanwhile, OpenAI is reportedly in talks for a round approaching $100 billion, signaling this financial escalation is far from over. As Anthropic stated, the funding reflects a pivotal shift: AI is moving from experimentation to large-scale implementation, and companies are betting billions on which tools will define that future.
