In a sweeping and unintended action, AI firm Anthropic triggered the removal of thousands of GitHub repositories this week. The incident began when the company's source code for its Claude Code command-line tool was inadvertently included in a public release. The leak offered a rare public glimpse into the engineering behind a leading large language model application, prompting developers to share and analyze the code on the platform.

Anthropic responded by filing a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown request with GitHub. The notice, however, was applied broadly, affecting approximately 8,100 repositories. This included many legitimate forks of Anthropic's own official Claude Code repository, according to developers who found their projects suddenly blocked.

Boris Cherny, who leads the Claude Code project at Anthropic, stated the action was a mistake. The company retracted the majority of the notices, narrowing the takedown to a single repository and 96 associated forks that contained the proprietary code. An Anthropic spokesperson explained, "The repo named in the notice was part of a fork network connected to our own public Claude Code repo, so the takedown reached more repositories than intended. GitHub has restored access to the affected forks."

The misstep arrives at an awkward moment for Anthropic, which is said to be preparing for an initial public offering. Such a transition places a premium on operational precision and legal diligence. For a business built on advanced technology, an uncontrolled source code leak followed by a clumsy enforcement effort raises questions about internal safeguards and process maturity that public market investors will scrutinize closely.
