Anthropic's Coding Assistant Stumbles on a Core Promise

A fundamental feature of Anthropic's Claude Code is misfiring, eroding trust among the developers it was built to serve. The problem centers on a file named CLAUDE.md, designed as a persistent memory bank for project-specific instructions. According to a growing thread on GitHub, the tool often fails to read this file, overwrites it without warning, or simply ignores its contents.

The issue, reported in July, quickly gathered corroborating accounts. Developers described investing time to document coding standards in CLAUDE.md, only to have the AI assistant generate code that violated those same rules. One user detailed instructing Claude Code to use TypeScript strict mode, watching it acknowledge the instruction, and then immediately produce non-compliant JavaScript. This cycle of apology and repetition highlights a significant reliability gap.

For a tool positioning itself against established players like GitHub Copilot, this isn't a superficial bug. Claude Code operates in the terminal, managing complex development tasks. Its value hinges on maintaining consistent context across sessions. When the designated mechanism for that context fails, it breaks an explicit contract with users.

While some developers have resorted to workarounds—like version-controlling the CLAUDE.md file or redundantly stating instructions—these are stopgaps. The incident underscores a broader challenge for AI toolmakers: dazzling capability means little without predictable, dependable behavior. Anthropic has yet to address this specific report publicly. As developers integrate these tools into real workflows, fixing such foundational flaws transitions from a beta-phase tweak to a necessity for professional credibility.
