Anthropic is placing its Claude AI directly into Microsoft Word. The company announced a new beta add-in, available now for Claude Team and Enterprise plan subscribers at no extra cost. This move introduces a direct alternative to Microsoft's own Copilot within the ubiquitous word processor.
The integration allows users to generate new documents from templates or edit existing text by asking Claude to adjust tone, tighten prose, or correct grammatical issues. Anthropic highlights Claude's ability to parse document comments, summarizing feedback and even drafting negotiation points on contract changes—a feature aimed squarely at professional workflows.
This is part of a broader push by Anthropic to embed Claude into common business applications. The assistant already works within Google Workspace and Slack. Last week, the company also released its Claude Co-worker desktop agent for Mac and Windows.
For some Word users, an alternative may be appealing. Microsoft's Copilot, launched over a year ago, has faced criticism for its deep integration into Windows and Office, with some reports suggesting user frustration. It's a familiar dynamic; longtime users may recall the mixed legacy of Clippy, the office assistant from the 1990s known more for interruption than aid.
Anthropic's beta period will test Claude's performance and usability within Word before a general release. Early reactions on social media range from enthusiasm to notes about occasional quirks, like unexpected document generation. The company has not specified a timeline for moving the add-in out of beta.
