Anthropic announced Tuesday that the U.S. Department of Commerce has lifted export restrictions on its Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models, ending a tense standoff with the Trump administration that began in mid-June. The company had disabled access to both models to comply with a government directive citing national security concerns, which barred foreign nationals - including Anthropic employees - from using the technology.

The restrictions came as Chinese open-source models rapidly gained ground, offering comparable performance at lower costs. Tech executives warned the delay gave Chinese developers a critical advantage. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick approved the release of Mythos 5 to select partners last week, citing adequate safeguards, and on Tuesday confirmed Fable 5 would also be cleared. Anthropic plans to restore full access to Fable 5 starting Wednesday.

Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown led negotiations with the administration after CEO Dario Amodei, a vocal critic of the White House's AI policies, was sidelined. The episode has left the industry uncertain about future regulatory moves, especially after President Trump's June executive order urging voluntary model submissions. OpenAI, facing similar scrutiny, rolled out three new models Friday but limited them to trusted partners, warning that such government oversight should not become permanent.
