Anthropic is facing a proposed class action lawsuit accusing the AI company of misleading customers about the usage limits on its premium Claude plans. The complaint, filed Sunday in California federal court, claims that the actual rate caps for the $100-per-month Max 5x and $200-per-month Max 20x tiers fall far short of what Anthropic advertises.
Plaintiff Karl Khan, a developer who upgraded to the Max 20x plan for coding work, alleges that the 20x tier delivers only six to eight times the usage of the $17 - $20 Pro plan, not the promised 20x. Similarly, the Max 5x plan reportedly provides just three-and-a-half times Pro usage. Khan says he hit roughly 20% of his weekly data allowance in a single five-hour coding session.
The lawsuit argues that Anthropic's website is a "black box" that fails to define how usage is calculated, leaving subscribers to discover hard limits only after hitting them. Users who exceed caps are prompted to purchase additional credits. One popular Reddit thread describes the premium plan as "extremely misleading."
The case seeks class action status for anyone who bought a Max plan since April 2025, with damages potentially exceeding $5 million. Anthropic has not commented. As businesses increasingly rely on AI subscriptions, this suit highlights growing concerns about transparency in usage pricing.
