The AI firm Anthropic has taken the U.S. government to court. The lawsuit, filed Monday in a California federal district court, challenges the Pentagon's recent decision to label the company a national security supply chain risk. This designation effectively blacklists Anthropic from defense contracts.
In its legal complaint, Anthropic calls the government's actions "unprecedented and unlawful," stating they are causing immediate and severe damage. The company reports existing federal contracts are being terminated and future business deals, worth hundreds of millions of dollars, are now in jeopardy. The designation requires all defense contractors to certify they do not use Anthropic's AI technology in Pentagon work.
The conflict escalated last month when President Trump posted on social media, directing federal agencies to stop using Anthropic's technology. The legal filing argues the company's reputation and operational freedoms are under direct attack.
This dispute follows a reported breakdown in negotiations over a substantial $200 million contract Anthropic signed with the Department of Defense in July. According to sources, the disagreement centered on usage limits. The DOD sought broad access to Anthropic's AI models, while the company wanted guarantees its systems would not be deployed in fully autonomous weapons or for domestic surveillance.
An Anthropic spokesperson stated the lawsuit is a necessary step to protect the business and its partners, but reaffirmed the company's commitment to supporting national security through AI. The Department of Defense has not yet commented on the litigation. The case names more than a dozen federal agencies as defendants, setting the stage for a high-stakes legal battle over the role of private AI companies in government work.
