Anthropic confirms rumored plan to design its own AI chips

Anthropic has confirmed that it will design custom chips to run its AI models, turning a previously reported rumor into an official plan.

The company is now hiring a "custom silicon team," with job postings for a senior engineer experienced in shipping semiconductor designs, as well as a silicon engineer and a technical program manager. A spokesperson confirmed the move to Business Insider and TechCrunch, adding that Anthropic will still take a "multi-chip approach" and plans to use hardware from other companies alongside its own designs as it scales.

The confirmation follows an earlier report from The Information that Anthropic was considering working with Samsung as a hardware manufacturing partner. Anthropic is not alone in this direction: OpenAI recently unveiled a custom chip called Jalapeño for data center inference, developed with Broadcom. Google has run models on its own hardware for some time, Meta has designed and deployed its own chips, and Mistral is reportedly exploring similar efforts.
