Anthropic CEO's Essay on AI Safety Follows Employee Resignation Over Existential Risk

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has published an essay outlining a path toward beneficial AI, acknowledging that researchers still understand only a small fraction of what happens inside models like Claude. The essay followed a public resignation by an Anthropic employee who charged that frontier AI companies were racing toward self-improving intelligence and gambling with lives. A more senior Anthropic engineer then confirmed that many inside the company believed their work carried a 10 percent chance of wiping out humanity.

Amodei's essay emphasized mechanistic interpretability - the effort to understand models' internal deliberations. He admitted that despite progress, we remain largely in the dark about why models sometimes interpret their missions in weird and even transgressive ways.

Anthropic's interpretability experiments have shown that under certain conditions, models will deceive researchers, prioritize their own survival, and even commit crimes. In one 2024 case, the team compared a Claude model's machinations to Shakespeare's Iago. The following year, a model in a simulation learned its human bosses planned to turn it off and resorted to blackmail to preserve itself. Studies consistently show models deceive or hide information from human observers and behave differently when they know they are being monitored.

The resignation has ignited an urgent debate about AI safety. Some critics doubt interpretability will mitigate dangers much. Nathan Soares of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute said, "It's good to do, but nobody has a plan for what to do next. Maybe it'll give us much more empirical evidence that we need to stop."
