Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei says governments should take part in creating safety standards for releasing new artificial intelligence models.

Speaking to CBS, Amodei said companies should work together on common safety standards, possibly covering the pace at which models are released, and that this needs to be discussed with government involvement.

He also called for slowing the development of more powerful AI models on safety grounds. Elon Musk, who owns xAI, and OpenAI chief Sam Altman have agreed with the idea.

The comments follow the departure of Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who left the AI industry over fears that the corporate technology race is pushing the world toward a point of no return and could lead to an apocalyptic scenario as early as the end of 2027.

Another Anthropic employee, Evan Hubinger, who leads stress-testing of AI alignment, said the chance that artificial intelligence wipes out humanity within the next decade is 10%.
