In a significant escalation of concerns over AI data security, Anthropic has accused Chinese tech giant Alibaba of making extensive and unauthorized attempts to extract its artificial intelligence capabilities. According to a letter sent to the U. S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, Alibaba allegedly carried out the largest known distillation attack on Anthropic to date, involving 28.

8 million exchanges with Anthropic's models using approximately 25,000 fraudulent accounts between April 22 and June 5. This AI training method, known as distillation, involves building a smaller model using outputs from a more powerful existing model. Anthropic claims that operators linked to Alibaba and its AI lab were behind this large-scale effort. The company has called for coordinated action between government and industry to combat the threat of illicit distillation, emphasizing the need to protect American AI leadership.

This development comes after the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy issued a memorandum pledging support for AI companies to detect and counter industrial-scale distillation attacks. Anthropic's allegations against Alibaba also follow its own recent identification of three other industrial-scale distillation campaigns from different AI labs. The situation has been further complicated by an export control directive from the Trump administration, which ordered Anthropic to suspend access to its latest models for foreign nationals, citing national security concerns. As the situation unfolds, Anthropic is working with policymakers to resolve the issues and ensure the continued development and security of its AI technologies.
