Ancient Secrets Revealed: AI Unlocks Charred Papyrus Scroll from Vesuvius Eruption

In a groundbreaking achievement, researchers have successfully used artificial intelligence to virtually unwrap and read a 2,000-year-old papyrus scroll that was severely damaged during the Mount Vesuvius eruption. The scroll, known as PHerc 1667, is one of the oldest in a collection of hundreds recovered from a Roman villa in Herculaneum. Despite being broken in half and damaged over time, the surviving portion of the scroll has yielded 20 columns of previously hidden text, covering over a meter of charred papyrus. The text, which dates back to the second or late-third century BC, discusses stoic philosophy on ethics, art, and human behavior.

According to Dr. Federica Nicolardi, a papyrologist at the University of Naples Federico II, the achievement demonstrates that it is possible to virtually unwrap and read these ancient objects without causing further damage. The project, known as the Vesuvius Challenge, was launched in 2023 as a global contest to read the carbonized scrolls using artificial intelligence and other software. The challenge has already handed out hundreds of thousands of dollars in prizes to teams that have made significant breakthroughs.

The newly read text provides valuable insights into stoic philosophy, including the concept of hormē, or impulse, and the importance of practical wisdom. As researchers continue to analyze the text, they are gaining a deeper understanding of the ideas and beliefs of ancient philosophers. The success of the Vesuvius Challenge has shifted the focus from developing techniques to read the scrolls to interpreting the meaning and significance of the texts. With AI unlocking the secrets of these ancient scrolls, scholars are now able to explore the wealth of knowledge and ideas that they contain.
