AMD announced Wednesday it will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic, pairing the cash infusion with a plan to dramatically expand the AI company's computing capabilities. The deal marks one of the largest infrastructure commitments in the fast-moving artificial intelligence sector.

Under the agreement, Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD's Instinct MI450 AI graphics processing units, using the chipmaker's new Helios rack-scale system. The first gigawatt is expected to come online in the first half of 2027. This builds on a string of recent data center partnerships Anthropic has struck with SpaceX, TeraWulf, Google, Broadcom, and Amazon, with rumors swirling about a possible deal with Meta as well.

Beyond hardware, AMD and Anthropic are launching a multi-year engineering collaboration. AMD will use Anthropic's Claude AI across its software development, engineering, and product teams. "By partnering with AMD across the stack, we are securing the capacity we need and optimizing it for training and serving Claude," said Tom Brown, Anthropic cofounder and chief compute officer, in a press release.
