Advanced Micro Devices announced a major strategic partnership with Anthropic on Wednesday, committing up to $5 billion in future investment into the artificial intelligence company. The deal centers on a significant computing power agreement: Anthropic will deploy AMD's Instinct MI450 Series graphics processing units within AMD's Helios rack-scale systems, with the first phase of deployment expected in the first half of next year.
"We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Anthropic and deploy AMD Helios at gigawatt scale," AMD CEO Lisa Su said in a statement. The chipmaker has been a key player in the AI boom, producing GPUs essential for training models and handling large workloads. While AMD competes directly with Nvidia, which holds a dominant market share, it has secured partnerships with several high-profile industry players, including Anthropic's rival OpenAI. As part of that arrangement, AMD issued OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million shares of its common stock, with vesting tied to deployment volume and AMD's share price.
Anthropic has been aggressively expanding its computing capacity this year amid rapid growth driven by the success of its AI coding assistant, Claude Code. The company has inked a multi-billion-dollar agreement with Amazon, as well as a multi-gigawatt compute deal with Google and Broadcom. It is also in preliminary talks to lease computing power from Meta. Anthropic closed a funding round earlier this year and is preparing for a potential IPO, having confidentially filed its prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June. The company did not disclose additional plans at that time.
