Amazon has quietly turned its shopping experience into a conversation. By merging its Rufus AI assistant with the upgraded Alexa+, the company has created a unified agent that doesn't just find products - it researches, compares, tracks pricing over a full year, and even completes purchases automatically when a preset price hits. Announced May 13, this shift moves Alexa from a voice tool for smart speakers to the primary interface for discovery on Amazon.com, the mobile app, and Echo Show devices.
More than 300 million customers already used Rufus last year. Now that technology sits at the core of search, drawing on a user's full shopping history, preferences, and household routines. The result feels less like a search engine and more like a buying companion that knows when the batteries usually run out or which cat food the family prefers.
Advertising follows the same logic. Sponsored products appear naturally in responses. A new Sponsored Prompts beta lets brands bid on specific qualifying questions like "What's the best noise-canceling headphones under $200 for travel?" Early data shows nearly 20% of users who see a Sponsored Brands prompt continue talking about that brand, with conversions rising 6% in those interactions.
The strategy extends beyond Amazon's own properties. On May 27, the company began offering the underlying architecture to other retailers through AWS. Kate Spade is among early adopters. Tinuiti analysts estimate the technology drives roughly $12 billion in incremental annualized sales, a figure that could accelerate with full U.S. rollout complete by late May.
Sellers now face a new reality. Optimization requires attention to conversational prompts as much as traditional keywords. Product listings must answer questions the agent might ask. Images and detailed attributes matter more because the AI surfaces them in comparisons. The advice for brands is direct: prepare for questions, optimize for answers, and treat every conversation as a potential sale.
