Amazon has activated a new artificial intelligence assistant for patients of One Medical, the primary care network it purchased three years ago. The tool, called Health AI, became available to members on January 21. It is built directly into the One Medical app and can answer health questions, explain lab results, manage prescriptions, and book appointments by drawing directly from a user's medical records.
The system is powered by Amazon's own Bedrock AI models. Prakash Bulusu, a vice president at Amazon Health Services, described it as an 'agentic' assistant designed to autonomously handle tasks using a patient's full health history. For example, a parent could ask it for guidance on a child's asthma symptoms, potentially avoiding an unnecessary clinic visit.
This launch represents the most significant integration of Amazon's technology with One Medical's clinical services since the $3.9 billion acquisition. The company states the AI is a product of collaboration between its engineers and One Medical's doctors to ensure reliability.
Privacy and data security are immediate concerns. Amazon asserts that conversations with the AI are not automatically saved to official medical records, all data is encrypted, and personal health information is not sold. The company says it complies with federal HIPAA regulations. Despite these assurances, the move places Amazon at the center of ongoing debates about the appropriate role of AI in medicine and the safeguarding of sensitive personal data.
Initial reactions from users on social platforms have highlighted the convenience, particularly for managing care for family members. The tool enters a competitive field where other technology firms are also developing AI for health applications. Amazon's distinct advantage is its connection to an established national primary care practice, offering a direct link between digital advice and in-person clinical services.
