Amazon has broadened the availability of its healthcare artificial intelligence tool, making it accessible directly through its primary website and mobile application. The assistant, named Health AI, was initially confined to the One Medical app following Amazon's $3.9 billion acquisition of that company in 2023.
The tool is designed to handle a range of tasks, from answering general wellness questions and interpreting medical records to managing prescription renewals and scheduling appointments. Amazon states that neither a Prime membership nor a One Medical subscription is required for use.
While it can operate without personal data, the company promotes Health AI as a personalized aide. When granted access to a user's medical history via the secure nationwide Health Information Exchange, it can analyze lab results and offer specific guidance. It can also facilitate connections to One Medical professionals. Prime members in the U.S. receive up to five free message-based consultations for common conditions; others can use a pay-per-visit model.
This expansion occurs as AI becomes increasingly common in healthcare, with rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic introducing similar services earlier this year.
However, the move raises familiar questions about data privacy. Researchers consistently advise caution when sharing sensitive health details with AI systems, noting that companies often use conversational data for training. Amazon asserts that its models are trained on abstracted patterns without directly identifiable information and that all interactions occur within a HIPAA-compliant environment protected by encryption and access controls. The company has not, however, detailed the specific encryption methods or precisely who can access the data.
Users can register interest on the Amazon Health page. Once granted access, they sign into a personal health profile to begin conversing with the AI directly on Amazon's platforms.
