Amazon Doubles Down on Anthropic with Massive New AI Infrastructure Pact

Amazon is deepening its ties with AI developer Anthropic through a new agreement that could see the tech giant invest an additional $25 billion. This move, announced Monday, significantly expands a partnership where Amazon has already committed $8 billion. In return, Anthropic has pledged to spend over $100 billion on Amazon Web Services over the next decade, specifically on AWS's custom Trainium AI chips.

The deal includes an immediate $5 billion investment at Anthropic's latest $380 billion valuation, with up to $20 billion more contingent on future business milestones. Anthropic stated it has secured up to 5 gigawatts of AWS capacity to train and run its Claude models, with nearly 1 gigawatt of next-generation Trainium2 and Trainium3 chips coming online before year's end.

This investment arrives amid intense competition among cloud providers to lock in leading AI firms. Amazon noted in February it expects to spend roughly $200 billion this year on capital expenditures, largely for AI infrastructure. The pact also follows Amazon's separate $50 billion commitment to Anthropic's rival, OpenAI, just two months ago.

Anthropic cited soaring demand from both businesses and consumers for Claude, which has strained its systems and affected performance. "Our users tell us Claude is increasingly essential to how they work, and we need to build the infrastructure to keep pace," said CEO Dario Amodei. The company claims over 100,000 developers are now building on AWS using its technology.

Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers, Anthropic has rapidly gained enterprise traction, with annualized revenue exceeding $30 billion. While naming AWS its primary cloud and training partner, Anthropic maintains a multi-cloud strategy, having also secured billions in compute commitments from Microsoft Azure and expanded partnerships with Google and Broadcom.
