OpenAI chief Sam Altman has thrown his weight behind a federal safety framework for frontier AI, warning that "no amount of American competitive pressure should justify recklessness."

In a post on X early Monday, Altman said he welcomed consistent safety requirements and independent auditors, and agreed with Anthropic's Dario Amodei that companies should "pace the frontier" - while stressing that pacing does not mean stopping.

Altman flagged two ways AI progress could go badly: losing control of the future to AI, and power concentrating around one person or company.

The comments follow an essay Saturday by Amodei, who proposed external evaluators with "employee-like access," common safety standards, and limits on unchecked progress. Altman said OpenAI would adopt similar measures.

AI stocks fell Monday as investors weighed the remarks. President Donald Trump said Sunday a slowdown was not needed and would risk America's lead over China.

Altman ruled out an OpenAI IPO in 2026 in a Fortune interview published Saturday.
