Alibaba Accused of Launching Massive Attack on Anthropic's Claude Model

A recent letter sent to US Senators has revealed a shocking allegation against Chinese firm Alibaba. Anthropic, the company behind the advanced Claude model, claims that Alibaba has launched the largest attack yet in an attempt to clone its technology. The alleged attack, which occurred between April 22 and June 5, involved the creation of nearly 25,000 fraudulent accounts that generated over 28. 8 million exchanges with Claude.

According to Anthropic, this campaign targeted some of Claude's most valuable capabilities, including agentic reasoning and software engineering. The company alleges that Alibaba used obfuscation techniques and proxy networks to evade detection. This incident is not isolated, as Anthropic warns of a growing 'circumvention economy' that fuels future distillation attacks. The alleged attack is particularly noteworthy, as it occurred after the US government took steps to curb such illicit activities.

Anthropic's accusation against Alibaba is not the first of its kind, as other Chinese labs have been accused of similar tactics. The company argues that these attacks undermine American investment and R&D, essentially turning it into a subsidy for geopolitical competitors. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges in protecting advanced technologies from unauthorized access and theft.
