AirTrunk has secured a 191.6 billion yen ($1.24 billion) green loan to refinance and expand its TOK1 data center campus near Tokyo. The company, owned by a Blackstone-led consortium, calls it the largest data center financing deal ever completed in Japan.
The funds will propel new development phases for the TOK1 campus, which is engineered to eventually support more than 300 megawatts of capacity. This expansion directly responds to soaring demand for cloud services and artificial intelligence infrastructure within the country. Construction is already underway to add over 100 megawatts of IT load to meet immediate customer needs.
"Japan stands as a critical cloud and AI market globally," said AirTrunk founder and CEO Robin Khuda. "We are investing in the foundational digital infrastructure required to support its expansion."
A consortium of twelve banks, led by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, MUFG, Crédit Agricole CIB, and Société Générale, arranged the financing. The loan adheres to AirTrunk's Green Financing Framework, mandating that its facilities meet high energy efficiency standards to reduce power use and emissions.
This deal follows AirTrunk's recent moves to establish a second campus in Osaka and a new Japanese headquarters. The company's total investment in Japan now surpasses $8 billion. When fully developed, its four Japanese campuses are projected to deliver approximately 530 MW of combined capacity, positioning it as one of the nation's largest hyperscale data center networks.
Blackstone, alongside CPP Investments, acquired AirTrunk in a landmark $16 billion transaction in 2024.
