The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory has awarded a contract to Palladyne AI Corp. for a program designed to break down barriers between military systems. Announced on January 28, 2026, the HANGTIME program will employ Palladyne's SwarmOS to enable drones, naval vessels, and for the first time, satellites, to operate as a coordinated team across all domains of warfare.

Currently, these autonomous assets often work in isolation. Palladyne's technology aims to fuse their sensor data in real time, creating a shared understanding of the battlefield. This allows the systems to synchronize their actions and adapt collectively, a capability seen as vital for modern conflict. The inclusion of satellites is considered a significant step, extending the network's awareness from the ground to orbit.

"This is about providing sharper, faster insight to the people making decisions," said Ben Wolff, President and CEO of Palladyne AI. The company's SwarmOS is designed to be platform-agnostic, allowing different types of hardware to communicate efficiently, even in environments where communications are degraded.

The contract builds on Palladyne's existing work with the Pentagon. In 2025, the company moved its core Pilot AI software to U.S.-made chipsets and secured key patents for cross-domain coordination. The award also follows the establishment of Palladyne Defense, a subsidiary that consolidated several acquisitions to create a vertically integrated defense technology provider.

Financial markets reacted positively to the news, with Palladyne's stock (NASDAQ: PDYN) rising sharply in pre-market trading. The HANGTIME program represents a concrete step toward a long-envisioned future where disparate military assets can seamlessly collaborate, a priority for the U.S. defense establishment under the current administration.
