AI's Workplace Impact: Automation Targets Routine Tasks, Augments Skilled Roles

A new analysis suggests the immediate pressure from artificial intelligence will fall on roles dominated by repetitive, rule-based tasks. Pavel Smelov, head of the Center for Strategic Research, notes that while predicting the full labor market effect is difficult, a clear trend is emerging: demand is declining for workers who handle standardized operations.

Jobs facing significant displacement in the coming years include call center operators, entry-level accountants, bank tellers, cashiers, and specialists in basic text processing and translation. Smelov also indicated that neural networks could replace many junior-level professionals who work with data in highly standardized ways.

The narrative shifts, however, for highly skilled professions. Here, AI is positioned not as a replacement, but as a collaborative tool. For pilots, train engineers, operators of heavy machinery, doctors, and teachers, the technology is expected to remove routine elements and accelerate processes, thereby altering but not eliminating these roles. These positions combine high responsibility with a social function, making human judgment irreplaceable.

Smelov concluded that modern AI models, capable of tackling complex technical problems, are becoming powerful support instruments for scientists and analysts. The overarching theme is one of augmentation for complex work, alongside automation for the purely procedural.
