AI Recreates a Space Pioneer, Delivering a Message in Jakarta

JAKARTA, April 12 – A digital recreation of Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin delivered a speech in Indonesian this week, marking the 65th anniversary of his historic spaceflight. The event, held at a local planetarium, was organized by the Russian House in Jakarta as part of its "Gagarin is Alive!" project.

The AI-generated Gagarin addressed the audience directly. "Dear brothers and sisters of Indonesia! From space, I saw your archipelago shining like pearls in the blue ocean waters," the simulation said. "On this Cosmonautics Day, I leave you one message: Never stop looking at the sky. According to Nikita Shilikov, director of the Russian House in Jakarta, the presentation left a strong impression. He observed that Gagarin gained numerous new admirers after the event, with attendees notably moved by hearing the first human in space speak to them in their native language. The project demonstrates a novel application of artificial intelligence, using it not for corporate efficiency but for cultural diplomacy and historical engagement, creating a bridge between a seminal moment in 20th-century science and a contemporary audience.
