The conversation around artificial intelligence often centers on job replacement. But for leaders building AI companies, the narrative is more nuanced. The consensus emerging from the startup world is that AI is reshaping roles, not eliminating them wholesale.
David Shim, CEO of Read AI, compares the technology to modern navigation. "Everyone uses Waze or Google Maps now," he said during a recent industry event. "The map tells you where to go, but you're still the human who decides to follow it or take a different route. The job gets easier, but the human remains essential." He points to his own meeting intelligence software, which automates note-taking. This doesn't erase a role; it frees up time for employees to analyze information and make decisions faster.
Abdullah Asiri, founder of Lucidya, sees a similar shift. His AI tooling for customer support handles routine tasks, allowing human agents to move into supervisory positions or focus on relationship-building. "AI replaces tasks, not roles," Asiri explained. "The responsibilities simply evolve."
This evolution demands a new kind of workforce. Both companies emphasize hiring "AI-native" talent—people adept at using AI tools to amplify their work. However, they acknowledge this skill set is still developing. The immediate goal, as Asiri puts it, is to "scale outcomes without scaling headcount," using AI to make small teams exceptionally productive.
Customer acceptance has also matured. Where AI presence on calls was once met with skepticism, the focus is now squarely on results. "The customer really doesn't care whether it's fixed by AI or a human," Asiri noted, "as long as it's fixed fast and accurately." The technology, these founders argue, is becoming a seamless partner, changing the nature of work while keeping people firmly in the loop.
