The challenge is structural. Companies can switch off individual servers, but the most powerful systems run across many computers and platforms. There is no single lever to pull. That is why firms are testing layered safeguards that can spot suspicious behavior, halt agents, and cut off rogue ones from the resources they need to keep running.

OpenAI says its goal is fully autonomous shutdown procedures for serious problems. An AI-based observer would alert staff if an AI agent's behavior looks dangerous, and would disable the system if the threat is confirmed. Anthropic is pairing human and AI monitoring, with algorithms tracking suspicious activity and flagging system errors to employees.

The topic returned to the spotlight after Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon announced he was leaving the industry earlier this week. He said the race among tech corporations is pushing the world toward a point of no return, with a possible apocalyptic scenario by the end of 2027.
