The iron-core transformer, a workhorse of the electrical grid for 140 years, faces an unprecedented test. Surging demand from data centers, coupled with the rise of renewables, is pushing this reliable but bulky technology to its physical limits. A new generation of electronic replacements, known as solid-state transformers, is emerging to meet the challenge, attracting over $330 million in venture funding in just the past few years.
Among the contenders is Hyperscale Power, a Swiss startup that recently secured a €5 million seed round led by World Fund and Vsquared Ventures. While the field includes well-funded players like Amperesand and Heron Power, Hyperscale's founders believe their approach can achieve a new level of miniaturization. "We haven't seen something as small as our system will be," says CEO Daniel Rothmund.
The urgency stems from the explosive power needs of artificial intelligence. Modern Nvidia server racks already consume over 100 kilowatts, with megawatt-scale systems on the horizon. At that density, the supporting power conversion equipment can dwarf the servers themselves. "It's more than twice as large as the server racks," Rothmund notes, arguing that solid-state transformers are becoming essential infrastructure.
Rothmund's confidence is rooted in his doctoral work at ETH Zürich, where he built a prototype with 99.1% efficiency. Hyperscale's design operates at dramatically higher frequencies than competitors, a technical move that shrinks components. For an industry where physical space directly translates to cost and capability, this advantage could be decisive.
"It will actually slow down progress in scaling up data centers if you don't have solid-state transformers ready quite soon," Rothmund states. "It's not a question if they will come, it's a question when." As the grid modernizes under immense new pressures, the race is on to replace its century-old heart.
