Allbirds, the sustainable footwear brand, saw its stock price rocket more than 600% on Tuesday. The surge followed the company's announcement that it will abandon its core business to become an AI infrastructure provider. After selling its brand and assets for $39 million last month, the firm plans to rebrand as NewBird AI and use a $50 million investment to purchase high-performance GPUs for rental.

The move, which requires shareholder approval on May 18, represents a stark turnaround for a company that went public in 2021 with a $4 billion valuation before its shares lost nearly all their value. Trading volume and the company's enterprise value exploded as retail investors rushed in.

Industry observers immediately drew comparisons to the 2017 case of Long Island Iced Tea Corp., which briefly tripled its value by rebranding as a blockchain company during the crypto craze, despite having no relevant expertise. That venture ended in delisting and fraud charges.

Allbirds faces similar skepticism. The company has no background in data centers or high-performance computing. While demand for AI compute is intense, the sector is dominated by well-capitalized specialists. Analysts at William Blair have dropped coverage, calling the strategy a 'Hail Mary' pass.

The episode underscores a familiar market pattern: a struggling company adopts the buzzwords of a hot technology, triggering a speculative frenzy. Whether NewBird AI can build a viable business in a complex, capital-intensive field remains an open question. For now, the market is betting on the story, not the substance.
