Anthropic's latest AI system, Claude Mythos, is not a conversational assistant. It is a sophisticated tool that autonomously identifies deep-seated software vulnerabilities—some hidden for over 25 years—and can chain them together to simulate complex cyberattacks. This capability has triggered a swift, if awkward, response from U.S. national security agencies.

Despite ongoing legal disputes that could block federal contracts with Anthropic, multiple departments are moving to test the model. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and intelligence offices are evaluating it, while the Treasury Department seeks access, concerned about risks to financial infrastructure. The urgency stems from a stark assessment from those involved: denying the government this technology, one source noted, would effectively hand an advantage to strategic competitors.

Through its Project Glasswing, Anthropic has granted early access to a handful of major corporations, including JPMorgan and Amazon, aiming to harden critical systems. The model has demonstrated an ability to discover thousands of previously unknown security flaws and engineer exploits across operating systems. An independent UK evaluation confirmed its proficiency at multi-stage attack simulations that take human analysts days to complete.

However, the advance presents a dilemma. While Project Glasswing aims to equip defenders first, experts warn that such powerful capabilities will inevitably proliferate. Treasury officials and the Federal Reserve have already convened bank leaders to discuss the threats to aging technology. The White House is reportedly engaging other AI developers as European regulators express alarm.

The U.S. government now faces a difficult calculation: leverage a cutting-edge tool for immediate defense, while racing against the clock before the same power becomes available to adversaries. Anthropic has delayed a public release, but the countdown, analysts suggest, has already begun.
