Peter Diamandis, the entrepreneur behind the XPrize, is putting up millions to change the stories we tell about tomorrow. He has launched the $3.5 million Future Vision XPrize, a competition designed to inspire filmmakers to create science fiction that envisions a positive, technology-driven future.

Diamandis credits the original "Star Trek" series for shaping his own ambitions. "It presented a hopeful vision where humanity and technology collaborated," he explained. "That motivated everything I've done." He argues that contemporary sci-fi is dominated by dystopian narratives, from killer robots to rogue AI, which he believes fosters public anxiety about technological progress.

To counter this, he enlisted sponsors including Rod Roddenberry (son of Star Trek's creator), Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, investor Cathie Wood, and Google. The contest challenges creators to produce a three-minute trailer showcasing an optimistic technological future. Submissions open March 9 and close August 15, with winners announced in September. A panel of judges will select finalists to produce short films, from which a grand prize winner will receive $2.5 million in production funding and a $100,000 cash prize to develop a feature film.

Diamandis emphasizes that while entrants are encouraged to use AI tools like Google's Veo, purely AI-generated submissions are discouraged. "The humanity of it all is really important," he stated. He sees the contest as a direct response to widespread uncertainty. "People wonder if they'll have a job, if their kids will have a job," he said. "We're flooded with negative stories about tomorrow."

His goal is to replace dread with what he terms an "exponential mindset" - a belief that individuals can actively shape a better future. The winning project is also expected to seek additional funding through Republic Film, potentially raising millions more to bring its vision to the screen.
