Jeff Bezos and the UK government are backing a two-year-old Cambridge startup that aims to become the go-to search engine for rare materials, a move that could reshape the chipmaking and energy industries. CuspAI has raised $450 million in a Series B round, valuing the company at $2.6 billion, with investors including Bezos and the UK's sovereign AI fund.
The company has launched the AI Materials Foundry, a coalition of over 48 tech firms, industrial giants, and research labs - including Nvidia, Meta, and Hyundai - to build AI-powered software that discovers and develops new materials. The goal is to slash research timelines and reduce reliance on scarce metals like iridium and ruthenium in semiconductor supply chains. Co-founders Dr. Chad Edwards and Prof. Max Welling warn that without faster progress, the next 50 years of industrial advancement will stall because the world needs materials that don't yet exist.
The fresh funding will fuel international expansion, with a new office in Singapore and hiring sprees in Cambridge, Amsterdam, Berlin, Tokyo, and the US. The UK government, which didn't disclose its investment size, said the startup is tackling challenges from energy to climate change. CuspAI has also brought on former Apple and Google executive John Giannandrea to lead US operations. The company previously raised $100 million in Series A funding last year.
